The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department (AOS) is pleased to announce Tom Skilling is the recipient of the 2023 AOS Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Tom studied meteorology and journalism at UW–Madison in the early 1970’s. Since 1978, he has been with WGN-TV in Chicago and established himself as a respected meteorologist both locally and nationally, known for his in-depth reports, enthusiasm, and use of state-of-the-art technology. Tom’s fingerprints are on many weather-related projects and initiatives in the Chicagoland area, and his media resume spans the TV, radio, print, and film landscape.

Beyond Tom’s commitment toward accurate, comprehensive, and accessible weather reporting, he dedicates much of his time to public outreach and education. From hosting climate change seminars and panel discussions to producing documentaries about severe weather events, his career in communicating weather and climate science to large and diverse audiences has been remarkable.

Tom is a pillar in the AOS and wider meteorological community and a shining example of what the alumni award represents. The award will be presented at a to-be-determined date in 2024 at the AOSS building, Madison, Wisconsin. To learn more about Tom’s career, explore his alumni profile.
